Jump into spring discovering the Penedès Wine Region

brots de primavera al Penedès

February 2022

The beginning of spring means that life in the vineyards is unfolding before our eyes... and that everyone wants to leave the cold behind and go out for outdoor activities!

The landscape changes almost every week and different colors burst in the landscape, so one of the best things to do in spring is to just take a walk among the vineyards to see the first sprouts and leaves in the vines and take photographs of what surrounds you.

Whatever the reason for your visit, you will find that spring in Penedès is a wonderful time, with a slower pace to enjoy all that it has to offer. We look forward to seeing you soon!

All the vineyard trails

By now you know that Penedès has countless paths that take you practically wherever you want. We suggest you to take the bike, choose a route and enjoy it without rushing, stopping at a winery, a village or a restaurant to wrap up the day. To organize it on your own, you can take a look at the routes of Penedès Turisme in Bikemaps. Not to worry, you don't need to be a professional; there are family routes and fairly flat and accessible areas.

If you prefer to get everything organised for you, there are bike rentals in the Penedès Wine Route. Rent an electric bikes and follow the self-guided routes that take you everwhere you want. Just that easy! There are also wineries that offer a bike ride around their vineyards, plus a wine tour and a tasting after.

If you feel more adventurous and the bike is one of your hobbies, it is a good time to program the 4 stages of the circular route Penedès 360, and complete this tour of our region to witness all its contrasts of landscape, from the sea to the forest and mountains. There are 3 different routes: one for road cycling, one for moutain biking and one for gravel bike.

Nature connection

If we talk about leaving the city behind to catch some fresh air, the advantage here is that Penedès is very close. We are obviously not talking about high up int the mountains nature, but you will be pleasently surprised by its natural scenery.

The large vineyards are the most obvious landscape, but few know that in the region there are 3 important natural parks: Parc del Garraf, Parc Comarcal d'Olèrdola and Parc del Foix, each with very different characteristics that offer a good network of itineraries and even accessible itineraries for people with reduced mobility and to go with a stroller.

However, what will surely surprise you the most are the environments where water is the main element, starting with the beaches of Baix Penedès and Garraf, in the south of the region, followed by the springs, gorges and little waterfalls of Les Deus in Torrelles de Foix or Les Deus in Sant Quintí de Mediona, up in the north, the many springs of water in Gelida or the curious case of the four ponds -we call pèlags- in Parc dels Talls in Vilobí del Penedès. Which environment catches your eye the most?

The Instagram moment

Who doesn't like to sit in front of a privileged view, feel the breeze and the sun on their face, with a glass of wine in their hand and good company? This idyllic moment is completely real in the Wine Bars and terraces surrounded by vineyards of the Penedès Wine Route.

And what is a Wine Bar? Well, in recent years, there has been a blossoming of settings in wineries, especially terraces, patios and outdoors sites, where you have the option of tasting a glass of wine without having to go for a full tour… although you will surely want to do so!

You may discover new wines, add some snacks or even a full nice brunch with local products... and just let the conversation flow.

Thanks to the moderate temperatures at noon, even during the winter, most Wine Bars are now open all year round, especially on weekend mornings, but spring is a great time to experience them. Enjoy your time off from the week and share this happiness with us on social media with the hashtag #penedesexperience.

If you haven't started the route yet, here is the list of terraces and Wine Bars of the Penedès Wine Route so you can have a drink and an aperitif.

Spring events

Vineyards start sprouting... and so do wine fairs! During the month of May, if evrything goes as planned,  there many upcoming wine events and fairs around.

Riudevins, in Sant Pere de Riudebitlles, gives a very original concept, as you can taste wines from the Mediona-Riudebitlles stream valley in private homes. They open their doors and cellars uncer their houses, located in the oldest part of town. Go inside the private homes and talk to the producers themselves!

ViArt will also arrive in Sant Llorenç d’Hortons in May, which obviously merges these two themes. The fair includes organic wines and cavas tastings, tapas from local restaurants, craft stalls and activities.

In Avinyonet del Penedès, a long-awaited event for locals and visitors is held: Microvi. This is a wine fair that lets everyone discover microwineries, local products, natural wines and even a night event dedicated to the Sumoll grape variety. The fair takes place in different emblematic sites of the town, such as the incomparable setting of the Romanesque monastery of Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs.

And if you want to suit up to welcome spring, don't miss the opportunity to book your ticket to the Festa de la Floració de la Carretera del Vi -The Wine Road Flowering Fest-, a white-party with dinner and live music that annually gathers the 13 wineries and points of interest of this route to introduce it to the attendees.
